The Western
Main characters of a typical western film
Typically, the three main characters in a western are;
·         A cowboy- Who is normally a local in the village/settlement in which is set and is familiar to the rest of the people there. Throughout the film the cowboy is usually portrayed as a hero (in many cases in classic westerns he is portrayed as the all American hero who is seen to be fighting off Native Americans). In both classic westerns and neo-westerns like No Country For Old Men the cowboy usually has a goal or journey that he has to complete/achieve.
Props normally associated with a cowboy include:
1.    Cowboy hat
2.    Boots
3.    Saddle
4.    Rope
·         A sheriff- Sheriffs in western normally don’t have the best of luck. The whole village is dependent on their skills and ability and so therefore they often fall victim to blame when things go wrong e.g. the villain/ criminal is not caught. Also there are many example of westerns were the sheriff is shot and/or injured. Despite this these sheriffs in classic movies stand above the rest of the people living in these towns and eventually prove that they a capable enough and so therefore a worthy of having the responsibility. Props normally associated with sheriff:
1.    Badge
2.    Horse

·         Villain/ Criminal- Is usually portrayed as somebody who is not familiar to the other characters due to the location in which they come from (usually from another town near where the film is set). This character usually has an anterior motive for why they have moved to the town (which normally is to cause trouble). Props associated with the villain:
1.    Black clothes
2.    Gun
No Country For Old Men 0
In side of the film regarding character No Country For Old Men is quite similar to that of a typical western, however there are some differences. For the most part Llewellyn Moss is portrayed a typical cowboy, in the way that he dresses and in the way that he acts and in the way that he dresses. On the other hand, he could be passieved as not being a typical cowboy because throughout the film is not portrayed clearly as a hero. Similarly, sheriff is in certain ways presented as a stereotypical sheriff because of the clothes that he wears and the props that are associated with him (one of the first scenes we see him in he is sitting on a horse). However contrary to the typical sheriffs in westerns, sheriff Bell doesn’t do much. Throughout, he is often seen sitting down. The character Anton Chigurh is the character that brakes the conventions of his character type the most. The accent that he speaks in and the clothes that he wears does not give a clear indication of where he is from, both tine wise and location wise. In addition to this the murder weapons that he uses represents the new evil that is entering the south- west which ordinary sheriffs cannot deal with.
