Analysis of ‘House party’

The film House party follows the story of a teenage girl and a boy that seems to be her boyfriend on the way to, during and after a house party. Through this film the themes of relationships, loneliness and fear. The first shot that is used in this film is an over the shoulder shot of the main character in a car speaking to somebody. For the first 30 seconds, the focus is on her, and we don’t even see the person that she is talking to. At the 47th second invisible editing is used- this automatically creates a sense of separation between Lacey (the main character) and the guy that is presumably her boyfriend. In addition to this when the two of them step out of the car the first thing that we as an audience notice is the fact that it was cold. Once they get out of the car the camera zooms in on Lacey. This done so that we are able to see the mist coming out of her mouth. Here the producer (Conor Evert) uses setting as a way of foreshadowing that Lacey is going to be put in an uncomfortable or unbearable situation. Another element that is key in giving the audience an idea of what is going to happen is the lighting. The lighting is really dim but there are street lights that extremely bright, that create a sort of yellow colour. This contrast creates a sense of instability and may be suggestive of either a possible mental health problem or up-coming substance abuse. Throughout the scenes that focus of Lacey at the party, editing effects are used to speed of the things that going on. All the while that this is happening Lacey’s actions. This highlights the fact that she is out of cinque from the party and that the people around her are completely detached.  Another factor that makes the movie what is the costume choice. Throughout the movie Lacey and Matt or seen to be wearing black. The way I think of it is that the person in charge of wardrobe decided to ensure that both Lacey and Matt wore black as a way of representing them as characters. The black outfit that Lacey is wearing is very casual and so could be inferring the Lacey is not up to speed with what is supposed to be worn at a party- suggesting social anxiety. Whereas the clothes that Matt is wearing (e.g. the leather jacket he is wearing) is suggest that he is a typical ‘bad boy’ and may possibly do some morally questionable things.

  1. Aliyah you need to always include the year it was made and the Directors name so that we know we have the right film and some context. When we analyse films it is customary to start with genre and themes so that the reader knows where they are. This also helps not to get dragged into merely explaining the plot. You would have benefitted from including clips or stills so that the reader to share your exposure to scenes from the film. Having said that you do make some pertinent points regarding mis en scene and the connotations that could be attached to the decisions made by the creative team.
